Wahyu Prasetyo Utomo is an lecturer/assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, Indonesia. He received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the Department of Chemistry in 2012 under the supervision of Dr. Afifah Rosyidah. During the 4th year of his undergraduate study, he simultaneously joined the master studies in the same department starting from 2011 under Fast track program. After completing the master’s degree under Prof. Hamzah Fansuri's supervision in 2014, he subsequently joined the department as a lecturer, focussing on inorganic chemistry. During his period as a lecturer, he actively joined conferences and workshops, such as joining the ASEAN workshop on X-ray absorption Spectroscopy in 2016 in Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI), Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, and subsequently performing the XAS measurements in the following year. He just completed his Ph.D. from the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), City University of Hong Kong under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Yun Hau Ng and Dr. Hao Wu (Macao University of Science and Technology, MUST).

His research is to develop functional materials, specifically thin films and heterostructure for electro- and photo-catalysis processes, focusing on energy and environmental applications. Specifically, he develops catalyst materials for ammonia synthesis from nitrogen or nitrate reduction in ambient conditions. In this regard, ammonia is an essential precursor for fertilizer and many nitrogen-containing chemicals and is now considered as a promising hydrogen carrier material due to its high energy density (17.6%). Therefore, developing materials and a sustainable system for ammonia synthesis as an alternative to the energy-consuming Haber-Bosch process is pivotal.

Wahyu has authored (as the first author) publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals, including Advanced functional materials (IF: 19.22), Small (IF: 15.5), Green Chemistry (IF: 9.8) and Energies (IF: 3.252). He was awarded as the best oral presenter in International Conference on Environmental Systems Engineering and Technology (ICESET) 2022 held by UPN Veteran Jawa Timur on 7 September 2022. He also currently acting as the Editorial Advisory Board of Chemical Engineering Research Articles (CHEESA) journals, a Sinta 3 journal by Universitas PGRI Madiun, Indonesia.
